Colin Woodham, the proprietor of Alpha Science Editors, was born in Scotland. He has a Scottish education at primary and secondary school levels and is a science graduate from Aberdeen (BSc Pure Science, Upper Second Class Honours) and Leicester (MSc) Universities in the UK. He has 20 years experience in industry including 14 years as a freelance copy editor of electronic scientific and academic manuscripts. He is a member of the Editorial Freelancers Association and has worked with PC systems since 1988.

He commenced freelance PC copy-editing for Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd (Shannon) in 1993, and has since worked for Elsevier Science Ltd (Oxford), Chapman & Hall (London), Alden Multimedia (Northampton), Datapage Ireland Ltd (Dublin), ICPC Ltd (Dublin), Oxford University Press (Oxford), Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins, Microsoft Research (Cambridge) and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) (Grenoble, France). He currently receives freelance work from Maney Publishing (London), publishers to the Institute of Materials, Compuscript Ireland Ltd (Shannon, Ireland), Crimson Interactive (Mumbai, India), InHouse Creative (Dubai, UAE) and Sunrise Setting (Torquay, UK).

Science and academic journals edited include disciplines of medicine, biomedicine, neurology, pharmacology, toxicology, virology, biology, biochemistry, chemistry, engineering, agricultural, environmental, earth and materials science and biotechnology. We have experience with various editing systems including text editors like BRIEF, the Word Perfect-Pandora (Elsevier) editing system and more recently, the Word-MathType-Athena (Datapage) system,  the Word-EJournals (Oxford University Press) system and TAGZ (ICPC) software for producing SGML format files for typesetting. Recent work for Maney Publishing using Word/MathType has also included marking up artwork. All work for publishers has been subject to rigorous quality control procedures by the publishers or typesetters.
